Jordan and IRAQ Shipment: Reopened their only Border Crossing

On August 30, Jordan reopened the border crossing with Iraq.

In July 2015, after the Islamic State took control of large areas in Iraqi territory in 2014, Baghdad for security reasons established the closure of the Turaibil Border Compound, which connects Iraq to Jordan.

Turaibil Border Compound, best known in Jordan under the name Karameh Border Crossing, is the only border crossing between Jordan and Iraq, and connects the Jordanian city of Ruwaished with the Iraqi city of Turaibil. Turabil Border Compound has a strategic importance for Jordan and Iraq, since it is an important artery, especially at economic level.

In 2014, the Islamic State assaulted this border zone and clashed with the Iraqi army in an attempt to take over the crossing of the border. The border was closed in 2016.

The impact of the closing has been severely to the land transport sector, given that companies had to find alternative, longer and more challenging routes. The opening allows a safe, direct 550 kilometer highway from the border directly to Baghdad and facilitates shipments to Iraq and Jordan.

The official news of the reopening of the border crossing was announced on 29 August 2017 by Jordanian officials, after Iraqi forces resumed control of the main highway connecting the border to Baghdad.

Officials reported that border agreements have been completed and security measures have been taken to reopen the highway connecting the border to Baghdad.
